What is a TurboTax Service Code?

If you’re using the online version of TurboTax (that’s the one that’s web-based, where you don’t need to install any software on your computer) then you’ll notice that there is an area where you can enter a “service code”. It basically serves as a coupon code box or for tracking an order (a TurboTax customer representative may provide you with one if you received help before completing your purchase). It will look something like the screenshot below.

If you use you use any of the offers posted on this page then you won’t need to use it. That’s because the discounts are automatically applied to your order by following the provided links.

How else can I save on TurboTax?

One of the other options to save a little bit more on your TurboTax order is by using a rewards credit card. For example, the Chase Freedom credit card offers up to 5% cash back on your purchases. A number of other banks offer similar perks. Just keep in mind that in order to signup you will need to pass their credit application process and not everyone will be eligible.

    Comments.

What if I’m an AAA member?

If your one for the 60 million American Automobile Association (AAA) customers in North America, then you probably already know that not only do you get phenomenal roadside assistance but also savings perks with your membership. And that’s not only on travel and new car purchases but on other things as well.

For the 2024 tax season (that’s for filing your 2023 tax return), AAA is once again offering their customers $5 to $15 off TurboTax Online. The deal is pretty much the same as as the featured offers listed above.

How to find and take advantage of the AAA offer.

The AAA discount is applied when you follow the link provided in your online account. Visit your regional AAA website (for example, for someone in Northern California it would be calstate.aaa.com, for someone in the North or South Carolina it would be carolinas.aaa.com, etc.) and from there you can either login to your existing account or set up a new account (you’ll need a active membership in order to signup). Once in your account, search for the TurboTax link in the offers section. Follow the link to the branded signup page on the TurboTax site.

To make sure the offer was correctly applied, navigate to the “Review your order screen” in the File section. You should see the discounted price with the retail price crossed out. If it’s not there, you’ll have to go back to aaa.com and try the link again (there’s no coupon or service code needed as the discount is applied automatically through the link). It should look something like this:

Important Notes.

Unlike some of the other TurboTax discounts we see, like the Bank of America offer, AAA runs their offers regionally. That means a member in Southern California may see a different offer or discount amount than someone in the New York region. Because we don’t have access to every region, it’s had for us to confirm what some of these differences are or when they’ll expire in your area. So just keep that in mind when taking advantage of the offer.

So what about those bank and credit union offers? Well, some of those discounts from a few years ago, including our favorite TurboTax Bank of America discount, is not yet back for 2024. Although it’s still early in season and we expect BofA to continue their partnership with TurboTax (you’ll see the discount link once and if available in their “offers” tab once you login to your Bank of America online account). The partnerships at many of the other financial institutions are also expected to return in early 2024.

Just so you know, TurboTax typically teams up with some of the top banking and financial institutions to offer banking clients a break on their at home tax preparation software. Not only is Bank of America part of the partnership but others like Citi, Wells Fargo, Chase, Sun Trust and dozens of others are as well. However, probably because everyone has access to the offers anyway (and they spread like wildfire on sites like Reddit), it appears that the deals are not as good as they used to be. Plus it’s hard to give a big discount when they probably have to pay their partners a commission or some sort of advertising fee to get exposure on partner websites or newsletters (which can be very costly).

But wait… There may be another tax deal from Bank of America.

We’ve noticed that Bank of America sometimes offers certain account holders $5 cash-back when they pay for section versions of TurboTax online with their qualifying BofA credit or debit card. We saw the offer last year from our personal account and it was available all tax season long.

To search for the offer, you will need to login to your online Bank of America account. Once there, navigate to the “cash back deals” link in the top bar. It should look something like this below although it might vary depending on your client level (we have a basic account):

On the main deals page the offer was among the first seven listed deals so you shouldn’t have any problems finding it once and if it returns here in 2024.

What we’re just not sure of is if the cash back is valid for all customers. You’ll have to check with them for full details and for any rules and restrictions.
